Top Things to Know and Do BEFORE a Flood

1
Ensure that the sides
of your home are sealed
to prevent seepage.

2
If a flood is suspected, have sandbags ready to place
as a buffer.

3
Ensure your family’s ability
to move to the attic or roof
if necessary.

4
Keep water-perishable valuables elevated.

5
Ensure that you have
flood insurance, floods
are easily possible in the Ojai Valley and yet many homes aren’t covered.

6
Make a video tape which films all of your valuables, and put that tape in your safe deposit box. This way, you have evidence of the belongings which you own.

7
Have canned food
and bottled water in your home, in case you are unable to leave.

8
Raise furnaces and water heaters, and electrical panels in your home to prevent internal damage.

9
Make sure you have
a flashlight and plenty
of batteries.

10
During heavy rains, pay attention to local radio and tv stations for weather status: a flood warning means a flood is already occuring or imminent and a flood watch means a flood is possible.
