Disaster Kit

THREE DAYS

Experts tell us again and again that Ojai Valley citizens will have to survive on their own for three to ten days should disaster strike.

We’ve customized a list of the must-have survival tools for three days on your own in Ojai. It’s simple to prepare and well worth it.

Prepare your own kit or order one from www.redcrossshop.org.

THREE DAYS’ worth of water. That means buying one gallon of water per person in your family, per day. So, if you have a four-person family, you’ll want to buy twelve gallons of water (4 people x 3 days = 12 gallons).

THREE DAYS’ worth of food. Buy food that does not need refrigeration and that can be
eaten without cooking. Include sustaining, high-protein items like peanut butter, trail mix,
and granola bars.

THREE DAYS’ worth of food and water for each pet!

THREE DAYS’ supply of prescription medications.

Utensils to eat your food such as a can opener and an all-purpose knife.

Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both. Local stations to tune into during a disaster are: KVEN 1450 AM,

Get Certified

The Community Emergency ResponseTeam (CERT)

The CERT system was developed from the need for a well-trained community emergency work force. These teams assist by responding during emergencies or during disaster situations.

Community members are invited to attend a CERT training and become certified. CERT members can utilize their training learned in the classroom and during exercises to give critical support during a disaster. This enables them to support their family, loved ones, neighbors, evacuees from other areas, or associates in their immediate area until help arrives. After help arrives, the CERT members provide useful information to responders and support their efforts, as directed, at the disaster site. CERT members can also assist with non-emergency projects that improve the safety of the community. The team reports to the nearest fire station to receive assignment during an emergency.

People who go through CERT training have a better understanding of the potential threats to their home, workplace, and community. We all can take the right steps to lessen the effect of these hazards on ourselves, our homes, or workplace. If a disaster happens it will overwhelm local first responders. They can use our help.
